It doesn’t make any sense that you should have to pay to use your music to make ringtones for an iPhone. Luckily, you don’t have to. Here’s how you can make a ringtone from a song in iTunes using GarageBand 08:

0. Update iTunes (currently 8.0) and GarageBand (currently 4.1.2) before you do this.

1. In GarageBand, select Create New Music Project. Don’t worry about things like Tempo, Signature, or Key.

2. Drag the song you want from iTunes into your new GarageBand project.

3. Click the Cycle Region button:

4. Now you want to select the portion of the song that you’d like to make your ringtone. You do this by modifying the length of the cycle region, which looks like this:

The segment must be less than 40 seconds. I recommend selecting Control (in the Menu Bar) and then clicking Show Time in LCD to aid in getting the length you want.

5. Once you’ve got it the way you want it, select Share (in the Menu Bar) and click Send Ringtone to iTunes.

6. The ringtone should appear under the Ringtone section of your Library in iTunes. Sync the ringtone with your iPhone and you can start assigning Contacts to the ringtone.
