After reading this article on half-hour computer boot times, I decided to test the boot time(s) of my laptop (2-year-old MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.5 with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM).

Restart: 48 seconds

This was the time it took from hitting Restart

restart

to seeing all the items in the Menu Bar appear.

Shut Down: 42 seconds

This was the time it took from pressing the Power Button (after shutting the computer down)

It’s very easy to save the contents of a webpage in Mac OS. Here are the instructions:

Web Archive (this is a type of file that will open in Safari)

Go to File in the Menu Bar, then Save As (or Command + S). Under Format, choose Web Archive. Save the file with your choice of file name and location. The file will save as a SINGLE FILE, unlike (at least of the last time I tried this in Windows, which was a long time ago) in Windows where the fileS you save never reproduce the original web page, as desired.

PDF

Go to File in the Menu Bar, then Print (or Command + P). Under PDF, you have a few options, which are basically self explanatory. If you want to save the PDF to a specific folder, choose “Save as PDF.” Choose “Mail PDF” to open an email in Mail with the PDF as an attachment. If you like to save receipts of online transactions, you can save them all to a convenient Web Receipts folder (in your Documents folder) if you choose…I think you’ve got it. Note that this same process applies for ANYTHING YOU CAN PRINT on a Mac.

I’m writing this at 3:40 PM Pacific on 11/5/08. The US population is about 305,585,769. Now, roughly 75.4% are 18 or older, so we’re left with about 230,411,670. Apparently, about 2,319,258 of those are in jail, so now we’re left with about 228,092,412. So far, with Obama receiving 63,784,438 votes and McCain receiving 56,337,186, about 52.7% of people who could vote (registered or not) did. Let me know if I’m forgetting something.

Here’s a classic problem: If N people can each complete a task in times T_i, where i = 1, ..., N, how long will it take if all N people work on the task simultaneously? Show that this time is less than all of their individual times, as expected.

(Here’s a specific case, with N = 2, T_1 = 1 hour, and T_2 = 2 hours: A painter can paint a room in 1 hour and another can paint the same room in 2 hours. How long will it take if they paint the room simultaneously? Both of the painters will paint less than the entire room, so the time it takes should be less than both of their individual times, or less than 1 hour.)
